Behavioral segmentation for apps that actually ship

This page is the desk’s public stance. It is not a teaser for a slide deck. If the rules below feel too strict, a shorter clinic may fit better than the flagship lab.

What we mean by behavioral

A demographic cut describes who someone told you they are. A behavioral cut describes what the app observed them do, in order, with enough honesty in the event stream to repeat the observation next month. Devpacketline treats the second as the only kind of segmentation worth teaching.

In Thailand’s consumer apps, that distinction matters more than textbook RFM. Shared family devices, cash-on-delivery hesitation, LINE-origin landers, and ATT-thinned identity all punish labels that look tidy in a persona workshop.

Three tests a segment must pass

It can empty. If nobody can fall out, you built a vanity bucket. Faculty will ask you to name the last week the count dropped and why.

Someone outside analytics can say it aloud. If the definition requires a join only one engineer understands, it will silently rot after the next schema change.

It licenses exactly one product response. Two campaigns from one segment usually means the cut is still two populations glued together.

What we refuse to call a segment

Install-week cohorts used as personality. “Power user” defined only by session count. “Churned” defined only by days since open when the app has a background fetch that fake-opens the process. Any bucket whose name is a marketing adjective.

Those objects can still appear in a dashboard. They are just not what this studio will critique as behavioral segmentation.

Where teams usually break

Event names inherited from a 2021 sprint. Properties that mean different things on iOS and Android. A “user_id” that is sometimes a device, sometimes an account, sometimes a guest cookie. Activation planned before the cut is stable.

The method page exists so you can self-diagnose before writing to the studio. If your pain is purely tool syntax, we will point you elsewhere.

Most teams start with Cohort Signal Lab. Taxonomy-only problems go to the four-evening studio. If you only need a conversation, contact the desk.
